Jong's Internet usage history
From JongBhak.com
Jong's first WWW(??)
I have been using the internet in the early 1990s (can not remember exactly. I joined Aberdeen university in 1990. In Korea, I am not sure if I used web before I left for UK as I was in the army from 1988. I have used DBase II(?) programs in the army. I had a computer acount in Seoul National University).
Jong's first Email account(1986)
I had an email account in 1986 as I had an account in Seoul National University computer center. I am sure it was in 1986.
I had an Aberdeen university email account in 1990 or 1991.
Jong's first FTP server usage(1992 or 1993)
I knew of FTP for sometime and it was 1992 or 1993 when I used it actively. It was introduced by a Ph.D. student in John Fothergill's lab. I liked him a lot (and he later established a bioinformatics company before he became a university prof in Aberdeen, Gordon? university). He was essentially the first serious bioinformatist I have ever met. He was making some DB schema for protein structure database in Aberdeen.
Jong's first Internet server (1994 August)
It was ind5.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk. It was prepared by Tim Hubbard. It was Irix and had a web server on it.
My first personal web server was sonja.acad.cai.cam.ac.uk. It served web pages in the Harvey road house. I think it was the end of 1994 or January 1995.
Jong's first hypertext program (1990 ?)
At that time, Apple had a hypertext system called 'hypercard?'. Something like that. I used it shortly in the language center of Aberdeen university. Also, I had an access to a shareprogram(s) that were hypertext program. My favourite one was blacknight or something. It was available since 1987 as I remember. While I was using it, I imagined the power of hypertext and linking all the human beings by hypertext. And also in the dormintary room, I imagined that, one day, computer OS would be all hypertext based and networked; Network OS. Later on, I found out that someone conceptualized that network OS much before than 1990.
Jong's first Wiki program (1997?)
I became to be interested in HTML based hypertext system as it was not easy to make HTML pages using Netscape composer alone. So, I developed a perl program that can self edit it. Essentially, it was a limited Wiki program. However, I stopped developing it further as I was sure that other people have made that kind readily editable HTML pages without using external composer. I found that Cuningham? couple had developed such as system. I am not sure if it was called "wiki" at that time. I tested the program given by the wife Cunningham. I told her that I liked it very much and asked if I can have it(or use it for my servers). However, she refused. A few years later, I found that wiki became widespread. When I looked up the authors, they were the same people. They had a company earlier. So, I felt that they changed their mind somehow and released it as a public domain program. Wiki is just a nickname of a very easily editable on-line hypertext system. Anyway, now, people regard it as a distinct program or a cluster of programs.
Jong's first BBS(1990s)
I started using a BBS in the early 1990s.
Jong's first user group net (1994)
I started using user group net to exchange information on Perl from 1994. In perl.lang user group, at that time, Larry wall, Tom Christiansen?, Randal Schwartz, Tim Bunce, Mark xxx, etc were around. So, I could get direct answers about Perl questions from them.
